Mohammad S A A Alothman: The 8 Least Favourite Things About Artificial Intelligence
No doubt, AI is one of the most disruptive and transformative technologies of our generation. The more we go deep into this technological field, the more it makes the world of AI deep and influences everything about it.
Although it has presented itself with enormous capabilities, there are a few concerns associated with AI that require great consideration. Being a person deep in AI technology solutions, I had a chance to watch the possibilities as well as challenges held by the new technology.
Today, I, Mohammad S A A Alothman, intend to tell, based on what I believe is the most disconcerting phenomenon with AI, why this matter must be of great concern to us.
1. Lack Of Transparency In Decision Making
Perhaps the largest single problem confronting AI at the moment is in regard to the openness of decision processes. The more critical areas in which AI systems start to be deployed - health care, finance, or law enforcement, for instance - the greater the need becomes to know how it actually arrives at its conclusion.
Alas, most AI systems, especially the ones based on deep learning algorithms, are "black boxes." In other words, this is that hidden part of AI: the data system processes to render a decision. As AI technologies advance, their opaqueness may lead to a loss of accountability, thereby very likely giving rise to the public loss and loss of trust.
2. Bias in AI Systems
Another alarming issue with AI is its susceptibility to bias. The machine learning algorithms receive training on gigantic datasets; hence, if the biases or incomplete pieces of information persist in the provided datasets, an AI will take them as 'truth' and replicate them over and over.
For instance, AI might subtly discriminate in favor of men as against women just because that will likely reflect both equally on their training data, both to train on and to fix an imbalance of hiring data.
Such ethical dilemmas arise insofar as AI bias is, however, entirely unfair and also inequitable, while at the same time fairness is one of the AI guiding principles.
3. Worries Over Displacement
Because its performance in such a task has stirred concerns mainly about AI-induced job replacement, so many authors started raising it. Businesses worldwide are making increasing use of AI to substitute humans in their productive activities – from waiting on customers through making goods and services.
For all its applications in making labor more productive and efficient, such a potential AI application cannot be thrown into the waters of mass unemployment for which it has an actual capability.
Perhaps the question most debated around this technology is on the job-displacement capabilities of AI. This requires careful discussion about how AI tech solutions can work alongside human work instead of just a replacement.
4. Over-Reliance on Technology
While AI continues to seep deeper into our daily lives, so does the potential risk of being over-reliant on technology. It may even occur that individuals rely on AI for such activities that previously demanded human judgment, creativity, or empathy.
Over-reliance on its usage may reduce our ability to think over the problems and can even devalue critical thinking. AI-based solutions seek ease of tasks along with the efficiency of working but should never trivialize the human touch in activities like decision-making, learning, and social behaviors.
Overdependence that is being encouraged by the AI aspect needs careful monitoring.
5. Privacy and Security Issues
AI systems typically consume lots of data to function well. Even though the information improves performance, it raises huge privacy implications. How much personal information is mined, stored, and exploited by AI systems? The user datasets are accessible to all who download the application.
The user application has a very strong suggestion of poor practices, and therefore it is guaranteed that it is not diligently maintained. AI tech solutions can be a good provider of valuable insights and improvement of services, but the aspect of AI that involves personal data is something that has to be handled with extreme care.
Data protection is of utmost importance, and a data breach could cause severe damage to people and companies.
6. Ethical Dilemmas
The ethical implications of AI are vast and complex. With AI increasingly able to decide autonomously, questions arise concerning who is held responsible when it goes wrong. For example, if an AI system contributes to injury during a medical or self-driving car crash, to whom is blame attributed?
On the other hand, while developing AI technology solutions, it's important to tackle these ethical challenges and define terms of ethics for the responsible creation and implementation of AI. The ethical dimension of AI is a space that I think should evolve parallel to the technological application in place to enable this positive societal outcome.
7. Limited Emotional Quotient
Though AI does so marvelously at such great leaps as extracting meaning and even greater strides at being able to maneuver through human language, AI remains woefully short of the achievement of "emotional quotient," that which humans inherit at birth.
Emotion quotients play very important roles for excellent service rendering in customer servicing, healthcare setups, and so on.
At present, AI may probably perceive words well but not even close to hearing tones, expressions of empathy or rich emotional states. In emotional intelligence, which is one of the key issues that companies would face in being able to give personal and human-centered services.
With technology solutions developed under the name of AI, there arises a critical need for the advanced sophistication of recognizing and responding to emotional intelligence.
8. AI for Control and Surveillance
In contrast, there is the controversial role of AI's employment for purposes of surveillance and control. For example, governments may use AI systems for population surveillance, and corporations may employ AI systems to control consumer behavior. This is based on data collection and facial recognition capabilities to identify specific individuals.
On the other hand, AI gave a superb suite of tools for security purposes but also raised problems of privacy violations and civil liberties demolition. Thus, the fact that AI could be used as a tool for control can quickly tip over to the wrong side if not appropriately checked. AI tech solutions should be aligned as much as possible to help people and not invade their rights.
